Introduction
A very large proportion of the Gentrys who lived in Kentucky in the first half of the nineteenth century were descendants of Nicholas-II Gentry, son of Nicholas the Immigrant. Virtually all of these are described to varying degrees in Richard Gentry's 1909 compendium "The Gentry Family in America"^<1> (GFA). It is frequently difficult, however, to identify the various family members he describes, with the many Gentrys found in census and other records. This article is designed to serve as an index for Gentry genealogists, in placing the families in relation to each other both in time and in place. Although most of the other Gentrys in Kentucky during that time can also be identified, this article is confined to just the one family to keep it from being overly lengthy and cumbersome.

The article is in two parts. In the first, the descendants of Nicholas are summarized by family and generation with a cross-reference to the census records in which they may be found. (Most but not all of the first two generations of Nicholas' descendants are included here.) In the second part, the 1800 tax lists as well as the 1810 to 1840 Kentucky census records are summarized in tabular form with an identification of the individual family associated with each entry where possible.

It will be noticed that there are three household records that have not been identified as to their relationship with the Nicholas-II Gentry family although it seems very probable that they were indeed closely related. If any reader can provide information concerning these "orphans", the writer would welcome such.

It will be noticed further that only the Nicholas Gentry descendants have been listed in the census records, as for example in Monroe County, where there were Gentrys of different descent present. A very large majority of the counties and individual listings that are not included here can be identified, but they are not a part of this summary.
